-WHO WE ARE-
Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, a medieval village in Chianti
Classico, owned by the Rocca delle Macìe Winery (www.roccadellemacie.com), has been meticulously restored and given a new lease of life
as the "Relais Riserva di Fizzano". The restoration succeeded not only in making the most of the existing shells of the buildings, but also in ensuring that the farmhouses offer the guests the highest levels of hospitality so as they can relax in complete comfort.
Situated at the summit of a gently-sloping hill at an altitude of around 300
metres, near the "Via Francigena" between Siena and Florence, near San Gimignano and Volterra, the farmhouse complex consists of six buildings, including self-contained apartments, gardens, green parks and a little chapel. There is even a restaurant inside the complex, offering authentic Tuscan cuisine, and a shop where you can sample and purchase products such as wine, extra-virgin olive oil, honey and grappa, all made by Rocca delle Macìe.
Original tiled floors, vaulted wooden ceilings, large
fireplaces and ancient mangers are just some of the architectural features which can be found in the 19 apartments of the complex, all of which are decorated with understated elegance, using original materials, and full of rustic charm in keeping with the period from which they date. All of the apartments feature fully-fitted kitchens and an internal telephone system. The discrete and efficient service of the staff guarantees the utmost levels comfort and privacy.
At the Riserva di Fizzano you can enjoy the holiday of a lifetime as you get to know first-hand the very area which was the cradle of Italian culture.
A large swimming pool, mountain bikes, green spaces with tables and chairs are all at your disposal. For the young ones there is a well-equipped play area and a special swimming pool.
-THE ORIGINS-
We could find traces of the ancient village 1000 years ago. In XI century we could discover from some ancient documents of Abbadia Isola that in "Fiziano" there were a castle and a court with the San Pietro's chapel. Because of its critical position, on the borders between the two everlasting adversaries Siena and Florence, it has suffered many changes of jurisdiction: in 1203 it was under Siena, but few years later it went
under the Florentine rule together with the town of Castellina in Chianti. At the end of the XIII century it became a strategic point from which the Florentine borders were defended.
In XV century Fizzano took part in the "Lega del Chianti" a confederation together with Radda, Castellina and Gaiole that took as its symbol the black cockrell. The ancient castle and the court were destroyed during the battles between Siena and Florence, only the small chapel resisted,
because we can read in some documents that in 1987 Fizzano was a farm with great files of vineyard and olives groves. When Fizzano was an abandoned farm, in 1984 Rocca delle Macie bought it and built a traditional olive press with two stone gears. With Rocca delle Macie Fizzano started its new life as a peaceful and relaxing place where people could enjoy the Chianti atmosphere and really "live" all the emotions that this unique land could give to each one.
